  • Both made their senior debuts against Iceland on Saturday night
  • They have been caught bringing girls back to England’s team hotel in Iceland
  • Pair will not travel with the England squad to Copenhagen on Monday evening
  • Foden has a two-year-old son and is in a long-term relationship, while Greenwood broke up with his girlfriend back in May

England youngsters Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood will not travel with their team-mates to Denmark today after footage emerged of the pair bringing girls back to the team hotel in Iceland.

The FA are now working in conjunction with Manchester United and Manchester City City to arrange travel home as soon as possible, while Icelandic police have now fined the duo 250,000 Icelandic Krona (£1,300) for the rule breach during the coronavirus pandemic, which must be paid by the individuals themselves and not by the FA or their clubs.

The pair made their senior international debuts in the win over Iceland on Saturday – but those accomplishments have now been overshadowed, with footage now emerging on social media of the women in question arranging a meet-up with the young stars.

ICELAND’S COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood have broken Iceland’s Covid-19 restrictions after inviting girls back to their quarantine hotel in Iceland.

After a spike in local transmissions, the government recently clamped down and brought in further restrictions.

Although the England team are exempt, foreign travellers arriving in the country are being forced to quarantine for 14 days before they are allowed to travel freely in the country.

In the video the Icelandic girls, one of whom is 20-year-old model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, ask how the stars are going to sneak them into the hotel.

At the other end of the line, Foden could be heard responding: ‘What you coming to the hotel for?’, before Greenwood appears to say to his team-mate in the background: ‘what do you think?’

Later footage then shows the footballers with the model and her cousin and best friend Lara Clausen, a 19-year-old law student.

Today, one of the girls has apologised for her part in the incident, saying she felt ‘really, really, really bad’.

She told MailOnline: ‘I feel really sorry for him and I never wanted to put them in that position but we didn’t know any better and we didn’t know that they were quarantining, or else we wouldn’t have gone to meet them.

‘We didn’t even know who Phil was. I asked Phil who he was. I’m not that much into football. I don’t watch football at all.

‘We didn’t even know that Mason played for Man United.

She added: ‘We haven’t spoken to them since. We don’t want to interrupt them because they are of course going through a lot right now. They haven’t contacted us.

‘It was a good night that we had, of course. We were all the four of us spending time together and getting to know each other. They were nice guys. Really, really nice.’

Lara added: ‘They were just young. We were all young and stupid and we all make mistakes. They treated us really well. They were such gentlemen. Really nice guys.’

The footage has been revealed hours after England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed the pair had been kicked out of the squad after they were filmed meeting with girls in the team hotel in Iceland – breaking strict coronavirus quarantine rules.

OFFICIAL ENGLAND STATEMENT

An FA Spokesman said on Monday: ‘Whilst in Iceland, both Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood spent time outside of our private team area, which was a breach of our COVID-19 rules.

‘While they did not leave the team hotel, it was an unacceptable breach of our protocol. They have both apologised for their serious lack of judgement.

‘The FA will be launching a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to this breach. We have spoken to the Iceland FA to offer our apologies for this incident and to ensure them that we are taking the appropriate steps.

‘We have also assured the Danish FA that all other players and staff members have been isolated within our group throughout this period.

‘Our immediate priority now is preparing the team for the match against Denmark tomorrow.’

Players have been given strict guidelines to ensure Covid safety – and the images – published by Icelandic outlet DV – appears to show Foden and Greenwood disregard those protocols on Sunday.

The pair’s conduct in bringing girls back has also contravened the FA’s behavioural rules for players whilst on international duty.

In the short clip, Foden and Greenwood appeared to be wearing their new England training wear and the players are now in hot water with management.

In an interview with DV, one of the girls in the Snapchat video allegedly filmed in the hotel room said: ‘We had no idea about these [Covid-19] rules, they never said we could not take pictures.’

DV claims that the girls were booked into separate rooms in the same hotel for the players to visit them.

One of the girls apologised for her role in the drama

She said the two youngster s were 'amazing' and that she 'did not mean for any of this to happen'

Another girl claimed to have notified the England stars that the pictures were in circulation with a Snapchat message, but ‘they have not opened it’.

She also claimed to have been in a relationship ‘with one of the boys for a few days’, noting: ‘The only thing I can say is that I had been talking to one of them for a few days. I’m not going to say where.’

In a separate video, the girls are reportedly seen on their way into the hotel while talking about going to meet the players in a room booked for them.

Foden has a two-year-old son and a long-term girlfriend, while United star Greenwood broke up with his model girlfriend back in May.

Manchester City midfielder Foden started for Gareth Southgate’s side against Iceland on Saturday night, making his senior international debut, while Greenwood came off the bench to achieve the same accolade.

The conduct of the two players was described as ‘naive’ by England manager Southgate

‘I think at the moment I’m trying to take a lot of information in,’ Southgate said at Monday’s press conference.

‘Obviously they have been naive, we have dealt with it appropriately. I recognise their age but the whole world is dealing with this pandemic.

‘I’m a father with children, young adults, I know people get things wrong. I’m not excusing that in this instance.

‘These are two boys I don’t know particularly well at the moment so can’t speak in great depth. I have got to try and speak with them later in the appropriate way. They have got responsibilities and they have apologised.

‘This is a job like no other in terms of the things you have to deal with. In terms of what is expected, the players who have been with us a longer time know exactly what is expected – whenever people have stepped across that line we have dealt with it appropriately.

‘The two boys are going to find themselves in a position where there will be lots of judgement of them from afar.

‘They understand they have got this wrong. Our job is to get on with the game.’

Southgate added: ‘Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the hotel. We are still getting the depths of the information. Still getting to grips with the detail. We have spent such a long time getting measures in place and the whole squad followed that to the letter.

‘I’m not going into any more details until I’m clear of everything. No-one from outside the hotel has been into the areas we occupy.’

Former England international Trevor Sinclair shared his thoughts on Twitter, writing: ‘Boys will be boys. Let’s not destroy our own young players. Learn and be better, end of x.’

ENGLAND STARS HAVE A HISTORY OF MISDEMEANOURS

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood’s mistake is just the latest in a long line of embarrassing episodes that have affected Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

All three of the squad’s most recent games have been affected by the behaviour of different members of the squad, beginning with a bust-up between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez back in November.

The clash, revealed exclusively by Sportsmail, came in the build-up to two Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo, and was in the wake of the pair’s clubs – Manchester City and Liverpool – meeting on the pitch.

Sterling attempted to grab Gomez by the neck following his arrival in the players’ canteen, the day after tempers had flared between them on the pitch.

Covid-19 then ended international football until this week, and the build-up to England’s first match against Iceland was hampered by Harry Maguire’s arrest while on holiday in Mykonos.

The Manchester United captain was left at home after being arrested in Greece, but has appealed his convictions and will face a full retrial after appealing the decision last week.

In a statement printed in Greek publication Protothema, one of the arresting officers on the night of the scrap recalled Mr Maguire, 27, launching a torrent of abuse as he was placed under arrest while reportedly trying to protect his sister.

The statement alleges Mr Maguire shouted: ‘F*** you all, f*** off, f*** the Greek police, f*** policemen, f*** Greece, f*** the Greek civilisation, I don’t give a s***’.

The statement adds that Maguire, ‘attacked the sergeant… he pushed him away and kicked him in the right leg causing swelling of his left and right tibia.’

Now, in the build-up to England’s Nations League game against Denmark on Tuesday, Greenwood and Foden have again cast a shadow over the squad.

Manchester City produced a statement on Monday afternoon in what they described were actions that are ‘totally inappropriate’ of Foden.

‘Manchester City FC are aware of the story which has emerged today from the England national team camp in relation to the behaviour of Phil Foden,’ the club statement read.

‘We have also seen the comments from England manager Gareth Southgate. It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.

‘His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.

‘The Club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the Club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the UK. We have no further comment to make on this matter.’

Manchester United revealed they are ‘liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation.’

Back in June, Foden found himself in trouble for breaching social distancing rules by playing football on a beach in Merseyside.

Foden, who was supposed to avoid close contact as part of Project Restart restrictions outside of contact training sessions, was challenged by members of the public during the lockdown heatwave while on Formby beach and he was spoken to by the club and reminded of his responsibilities.

While the pair would have been looking ahead to England’s next fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen on Tuesday night, they will now leave Iceland under a dark cloud.

The pair were both absent from England training on Monday and it was then confirmed that they would leave the camp and travel home before the team’s second and final match.

Sportsmail has contacted the players’ agents for comment.
